As you remember these fallen officers, take comfort in recalling that they dedicated their lives to the same principles of honor, duty and courage that brought you to the badge. Such a life is truly rich. Take strength in knowing that when an officer falls, our resolve to serve those in need is not diminished. Our dedication to protecting those in danger is not weakened. Our commitment to remembering those with whom we shared the badge does not fade.

Godspeed, brothers and sisters. You fought the good fight. Now rest in peace…

Texas officer killed while chasing motorist

CARTHAGE, Texas — A Carthage police officer died in a wreck while he was on duty early Tuesday morning. Everett Dennis, 23, was killed when his vehicle rolled over and he was thrown from the car. The wreck happened on the southeast Loop in Carthage.

Carthage Assistant Police Chief Michelle Jeter said Dennis was responding to a speeding car and might have been side-swiped by another car or an animal.

"It appears he tried to catch up with the violator to read his license plate tags and that's when he was hit," Jeter said. "We don't know who hit him. Only Dennis knows."

Carthage Police are investigating and Dennis' body has been sent to Dallas for an autopsy.

Jeter said grievance counselors and a police chaplain are helping police officers cope with Dennis' loss.

"He was one of the most dedicated officers," Jeter said. "He was top notch fellow who was truly living his dream."
